Moving to a new home can be an exciting yet stressful experience. To ensure the process goes smoothly, it's essential to steer clear of common pitfalls. Here are ten things to avoid doing on move day:

  1. Procrastinating Packing Waiting until the last minute to pack can lead to chaos and forgotten items. Start packing well in advance, ideally a few weeks before the move. Label boxes clearly and keep essentials easily accessible.

  2. Ignoring a Moving Checklist Without a detailed moving checklist, it's easy to overlook important tasks. Create a comprehensive list that includes tasks such as making move day plans for kids (and pets!), notifying utility companies, forwarding mail, and confirming moving truck reservations. We can provide you with a handy checklist - ask us for more information!

  3. Not Hiring Professional Movers Attempting to handle the move entirely on your own can result in injury or damage to belongings. Professional movers have the experience and equipment to transport items safely. Research reputable moving companies and book them in advance.

  4. Forgetting to Change Your Address Failing to update your address can lead to missed bills and important correspondence. Notify the post office, banks, and other institutions of your new address before moving day. Remember to update key identification such as your driver’s licence.

  5. Neglecting to Pack an Essentials Box An essentials box with items like toiletries, medications, important documents, and a change of clothes can make the first night in your new home more comfortable. Without it, you may find yourself rummaging through boxes for necessities. fIf you have children and/or pets - make sure you set aside their essential items too!

  6. Overloading Boxes Packing boxes too heavy can cause them to break or become difficult to carry. Distribute weight evenly and use sturdy boxes. For heavy items like books, use smaller boxes to prevent strain on the movers. Do not use garbage bags or laundry baskets to pack your items.

  7. Not Protecting Fragile Items Wrapping delicate items in bubble wrap or packing paper is crucial to prevent breakage. Clearly mark boxes containing fragile items and inform the movers to handle them with care.

  8. Disregarding Safety Precautions Lifting heavy furniture without proper technique can lead to injuries. Use moving straps, dollies, and team lifting methods. Keep pathways clear and be mindful of tripping hazards.

  9. Skipping an Inventory Check Without an inventory list, it’s challenging to track your belongings. Keep a checklist of all items being moved and cross-reference it as boxes are loaded and unloaded. Consider creating a floor plan to add even more accuracy to your inventory and planning.

  10. Underestimating the Time Needed Moving often takes longer than anticipated. Allocate extra time for unexpected delays and be flexible with your schedule. Starting early and staying organized can help reduce stress. Be sure to keep in touch with your movers in the days leading up to your move to advise them of any changes you’re making to your move (more items, fewer items, additional pick up or drop off) and to get the most up to date confirmation of your service times.

By avoiding these common mistakes, you can make your move more efficient and less stressful. Proper planning and preparation are key to a smooth transition to your new home.
