Moving can feel overwhelming, especially when you're not sure what to expect. From timelines and pricing to packing and logistics, it’s normal to have questions along the way. In this article, we will cover some of the most common moving questions that we get on a regular basis.
How Far In Advance Should You Book Your Move?
During the “peak” moving season (May through September) it’s good to book with as much notice as possible to ensure you secure the date you need for your move. In the quieter months (October through March) more notice is always better but booking two-three weeks in advance is possible. Planning for your move should definitely start earlier than that, however.
Are Moves Charged As A Flat Rate Or By The Hour?
Most local moves are billed on an hourly basis, which typically includes the moving crew, truck, equipment, and basic supplies. The total cost depends on how long the move takes, so preparation can help keep costs down. In some cases, movers may offer flat-rate pricing for smaller or highly predictable moves.
What's The Best Way To Prepare For A Move?
Regardless of the distance you may be travelling, moving can feel overwhelming. But if you break down the tasks, things can start to feel more manageable. Once you know when you’re going to move (even if the exact date isn’t yet known) there are steps you can take to make your move go more smoothly. A checklist can be a big help to keep you organized and on track. Click here for our moving preparation checklist.
How Long Does A Local Move Take?
The length of a local move depends on several factors, including the size of your home, the number of items being moved, and how accessible both locations are. For example, a one-bedroom apartment may take just a few hours, while a larger family home could take a full day. Factors like stairs, long carry distances, or tight spaces can also impact timing. The best way of estimating how long your move may take is to get an in-home estimate so that the mover can see everything themselves. This can also help to avoid potential extra fees that come from surprises as most moves are billed by the hour and these surprises often add time to the move.
Do I Need To Be Present During The Move?
We strongly recommend that you or a trusted representative be present at both the pickup and delivery locations. This ensures that the moving company can confirm details, answer any questions, and place items exactly where you want them in your new space. Being present also allows you to do a final walkthrough and ensure nothing is overlooked. There are also documents that need to be signed off at the conclusion of your move.
What Qualifies As A Long-Distance Move?
A long-distance move is a move that takes place over distances longer than 50 miles/80 kms. Short-haul long-distance moves range from 50 miles to 500 miles (800 kms), while long-haul moving services are 500 miles or more. These would include cross-border and international moves - but any moves outside of the country will have other considerations (customs/immigration paperwork, allowable items, air or sea transportation, etc).
What Is The Difference Between A Local & Long Distance Move?
The main difference between local and long-distance moving comes down to distance, logistics, and how the move is priced and planned. Local moves are typically completed in a single day and require less coordination.
Long-distance moves, on the other hand, often involve more detailed planning including route coordination, scheduling, and sometimes regulatory requirements. Pricing is usually based on distance and the weight or volume of your belongings rather than time.
Do Movers Help With Packing, Or Is It Just Transportation?
This depends on the services you have requested and booked. Many local moves are transportation only. Movers will pad and wrap all of your furniture and large items, and put hanging clothes into wardrobe cartons, but otherwise the packing of your belongings into moving cartons is up to you. Packing services are always available with any local move, however.
Usually the professional packing team will visit your home a day before moving day to pack up all of your belongings - or those that you have requested packing services for. The following day the movers will come to load your packed cartons and furniture onto the moving van. In the case of a small move - packing and moving may be completed on the same day. Packing services may be provided for all household items or just fragile or high value items. It’s up to you!
Are My Belongings Insured During The Move?
Yes, your belongings are covered by basic liability protection while they are being handled and transported by a moving company; if you hire an insured moving company that is. This provides a nominal level of coverage in the unlikely event of loss or damage during the move. However, standard liability (“released”) is limited, so many companies also offer increased carrier liability for customers who want greater protection, full replacement value, or are moving high-value items. We always recommend reviewing your coverage options ahead of time so you understand exactly what is included and what isn't. Increased carrier liability is purchased for an additional fee and is based on the value of your items to be moved, as declared by you.
What Is Downsizing?
Downsizing involves moving a larger living space to a smaller living space; often from a larger home to a smaller home or apartment / condo. For this reason, downsizing moves also involve reducing the number of belongings that are taken to the new living space. Sorting through and transporting, donating or removing these surplus items can end up being a large part of these moves.
How Do I Decide What To Keep When Downsizing?
A good starting point is to consider what you use regularly and what will realistically fit in your new space. It can help to categorize items into “keep,” “donate,” “sell,” and “discard.” Focus on practicality first, then sentimental items. For more information, consult our downsizing guide here.
How Do You Choose The Right Moving Company?
Choosing the right moving company can determine whether your relocation is smooth and stress-free or is filled with challenges. With so many options out there, it can be hard to know which companies you can rely on and which might fall short of expectations. When deciding between multiple moving companies, we recommend:
Looking at their online reviews. Reviews give you a sense of other people's experiences when moving, and might flag potential concerns. Pay close attention to issues that come up repeatedly i.e., overcharging, being late, etc., as these patterns are often warning signs of likely issues.
Talk to friends, family, neighbours, associates for their relevant experiences. They may be able to suggest a trusted service provider.
Getting their licensing and insurance info. All certified movers are required to comply with strict rules that are for protecting customers and ensuring fair business practices. Make sure the moving company you choose is properly licensed and insured to protect you and your belongings during the move. Scheduling an in-person estimate (survey). In-person surveys allow the moving company to get a better sense of what the move will entail, which allows them to give you a more accurate estimate and avoid potential hidden fees. They also give you a better sense of who you'll be dealing with through the moving process. We always recommend avoiding companies that don't offer in-person estimates as an option. You may choose a virtual survey (vs physically on-site) but you should be talking to a person and they should actually see what you plan to move and from where. A quick quote from a website may not capture the full picture of your service requirements. A low estimate up front might mean a bigger bill on moving day. The estimates you receive should be in writing and detailed. Aim for three estimates to allow you to compare.
There are a lot of options in the market - cost should not be your sole consideration when choosing a mover. Look for evidence of accountability and experience. Check with your local Chamber of Commerce, Better Business Bureau, and the Canadian Association of Movers can also help verify movers for you.
